Naturpark Stechlin-Ruppiner Land
“In the north of the shire Rupppin, close to the border of Mecklenburg, from the small village Gransee to Rheinsberg, a lakes cape leads through a sparely populated and wooded area.”
This landscape, described by the famous poet Theodor Fontane at end of the 19th century, didn’t change its face until today. It’s the heart of the nature park Stechlin- Ruppiner Land The park (800 km2) is located in the north of Brandenburg between the cities Fürstenberg, Gransee, Neuruppin and Wittstock. Beech forests and lakes are the main attributes.
The large beech forests are outstanding beautiful and of great ecological value, as well as the many lakes (>100), where you can go fishing or swimming, canoeing or to go aboard a steamboat in Neuruppin and Rheinsberg. The heraldic animal of the nature park is the “handcuffs-duck“, due to the sound of its flying wings. Moreover the rare European otter is native to the whole park, as well as the osprey, cranes and the kingfisher. Since two years the nature park house attracts visitors to the park and the exhibition is mainly geared to families. The castle Rheinberg offers, beside the outstanding hall of mirrors and the hall of shells, a Kurt Tucholsky memorial. Further the city Rheinsberg is host of the annually opera festival and the potter market every second October.
