Naturpark Mecklenburgisches Elbetal/Biosphärenreservat Flusslandschaft Elbe M-V
UNESCO biosphere reserve and nature park at the same time
Nature close river dominated landscape only can be conserved in combination. Due to this Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Schleswig- Holstein get together to protect the valley of the Elbe River and it’s floodplains. The 3.750 km2 large border crossing biosphere reserve the UNESCO declared “Flusslandschaft Elbe” in 1997. The part within Mecklenburg is the 462 km2 large nature park Mecklenburgisches Elbetal, which ranges over a 65km long distance between Boizenburg and Dömitz. The Elbe is Germany’s longest free flowing river; instead it’s embanked since the 19th century. But still the constant change between high and low water forms this cultural landscape. The Elbe valley is the most important area for Germany’s storks and the Elbe beaver and due to it’s function as flight passage and overwinter area the greatest part of the nature park was declared as “European Bird Protection Area“.
