Naturpark Arnsberger Wald
The nature park "Arnsberger Wald" is located in a charming site at the southern edge of the Westphalian bay. Haarstrang delimits it in the north and Ruhrtal in the south. An overall 650 km enclosing path network invites the hiker to longsome tours through the four landscapes that are silhouetted against each other – Haarstrang, Möhnetal, Arnsberger Wald and Arnsberger Ruhrtal.
The Möhnesee emerged as a scenically formative element only in 1913 with the building of the dam wall. Today the Möhne dam is the most extensive water supply dam in North Rhine-Westphalia. Due to the fact that the lake is not serving directly for the drinking water supply it offers an abundance of nature related and modern leisure time activities, from swimming to fishing to sailing and to surfing. The nature trails in the Bibertal (Rüthen) and at the Bilsteinhöhle (Warstein) give information about the special features of the forest as well as interesting and lovely details of the nature park. Furthermore, the nature park has picnic areas and playgrounds with excellent leisure activities, whereas especially the stations Himmelpforten (Ense), Bibertal (Rüthen), Rabennest (Kallenhardt), forest playground Victoria (Warstein) and Am Evenkopf (Eversberg) should be emphasized. A special highlight for all visitors is the game reserve at the Bilsteinhöhle in Warstein, where the demands of hobby geologist and biologist are highly met. Additionally, the park offers all-season events, excursions, educational programs, guided tours and bike rental.
