Naturpark Barnim
Two Länder – one park
Barnim is a border region in many aspects. It is the first cross-border nature reserve of Land Brandenburg and Land Berlin. In the middle of the tri-city area of Bernau, Eberswalde and Oranienburg lies the Brandenburg part of the overall 750 km2 covering nature park. About five per cent of the area is located in the northern Berlin districts Pankow and Reinickendorf.
Water shapes the appearance of the national park. Outstanding are the widespread so-called „Sölle“ – water-filled hollows in a field that were formed by huge ice blocs during the ice age – as well as small and large lakes. They are situated separately or are stringed along inshore waters in former melt-water gorges.
The fire-bellied toad is the heraldic animal of the national park. The high water content agrarian landscape of Barnim provides an ideal habitat for toad and frog species that are threatened by extinction. Near the many unspoilt inshore waters of Barnim a diversity of different animals, like the otter, beaver and water shrew can be found. The “Schellente” – a duck species has returned to the forest of some lakesides and is accompanying the osprey and white-tailed eagle.
The national park Barnim is the only nature reserve of Land Brandenburg with a direct connection to the suburban rail network of the German capital Berlin. Additionally, the Heidekraut-railway and the Stettiner railway connect the eastern part of the nature park. This means a comfortable stress-free and eco-friendly journey into the national park “Naturpark Barnim”. Especially favored are the lakes for bathing Liegnitz-, Wandlitz- and Lehnitzsee. The Briesetal, Hussitenstadt Bernau and the Märkische Eiszeitstrasse are embedded in a broad and well-signposted trail network. Adventures of a special kind are offered by the nature park-equator and the nature park-meridian, to mention only two of the various bike paths and trails of the nature park. Organized bike- and hiking tours are offered regularly, among others, by the watch of the national park, the German National Conservation Agency, the hiking association of Berlin and the German Bike Club.
