Bayerische Rhön

Region of the future – Nature Park and UNESCO- biosphere reserve Rhön

The nature park Bavarian Rhön is situated in the middle of Germany in the three-land-hit Bavaria, Hesse and Thuringia. Since 1991 large parts of the nature park are accredited by the World Heritage Organization UNESCO as a biosphere reserve.

The Bavarian Rhön is characterized by national sights like the cloister Kreuzberg near Bischofsheim/Rhön, the Schwarze Moor near Fladungen and the large nature reserve areas Lange Rhön and Schwarze Berge. The Rhön is called the “land of great panoramic views” with its colorful meadows.

Different nature trails explain features, which are important concerning nature protection and which are of geological and historical importance, like for example the brown coal gallery near Bauersberg (Bischofsheim/R), the forest nature trail Lösershag (Wildflecken-Oberbach), the moor nature trail Schwarzes Moor or the nature trail Gangolfsberg with its basalt prisms wall (Oberelsbach). Those, who are interested in lime grass invited to the nature trail Weyhershauk near Ostheim /R. Traditional fruit varieties, are explained in Hausen /R. on the fruit orchards.
Several hiking trails of the nature park and of the Rhönklub and a large cycle track call for a sustainable experience of the natural and cultural landscape Rhön. The information points and the tourism information are at your disposal.
