Naturpark Spessart e.V.

Deep grounds, rolling slopes and hills are characteristic for the Spessart- landscape of the nature park between Main, Sinn and Kinzig. The Spessart Mountains of the nature park reach an elevation up to 600m.

Forests cover highs and slopes. Only the meadows and villages are free from forest. Large parts of Spessart are covered by deciduous forest. The nature reserve areas (for example “Rohrberg” and “Metzger”) have originally very old Spessart oak trees. Accurately cultivated forests deliver the famous Spessart-veneer oaks.
Long centuries the archbishops of Mainz have been the landlords. As successors of the imperial “Bannforsten” they have tolerated the settlement no more than in the 12th and 13th century. The agriculture was very poor and one was searching for purchasing possibilities. Waggoner form the Spessart travelled through whole Europe. Through the settlement of glassworks one was hoping for new work possibilities. They also disappeared like the forge hammer, potter and char burner. But they left their traces, which can be discovered today.

The climate, landscape and cultural history make the Spessart to the ideal recreational area!
