Bayerischer Wald

Largest nature park of Bavaria

The Bavarian Forest Nature Park is situated in the southeast of Germany, between the Danube and the ridge forming the Bavarian-Bohemian border.
The Bavarian Forest National Park to the east, the Landscape Protection Area and the Sumava National Park on the Czech side and the Upper Bavarian Forest Nature Park to the north are all neighbors of the Bavarian Forest Nature Park.

With a surface of 307.700 ha the Bavarian Forest National Park is one of the largest Nature Parks of Bavaria or even Germany. The landscape is a part of the biggest locally coherent woodland of Central Europe. Thus 50 % of the area is covered with woods and reach its highest peak at the "Große Arber" (1456 m). There are only a few nature parks, which can offer such a diversity of natural environment. From the mixed forests of the mountains to the high altitude spruce areas, to the upland moors of the Bavarian-Bohemian border.

The Bavarian Forest is well known for its versatile tradition and ancient customs, almost like no other region. The processions, horsemen-pilgrimage and proper folk festival indicate the deep relationship to the long-established traditions and ancient customs, which can be admired by visitors the whole year.

In the large area of the Bavarian Forest Nature Park some animals and plants have found a last refuge. In particular the otter, one of the most endangered species in middle Europe, is worth mentioning. It is still at home along the Ilz, the "Great Regen" and their tributaries. The otter was very close to extinction at one point. As further species the lynx and the capercaillie can be mentioned.
The summit of the Arber is a last refuge for plant remnants from the last ice age outside the Alps and the tundra.
Protection and conservation of these natural treasures are one of the principal duties of the Bavarian Forest Nature Park.
