Naturpark Diemelsee
The nature park Diemelsee lies in the extreme northwest of Hess and ranges with a third of its surface to the neighbored North Rhine-Westphalia. It is park of the Rothaargebirge, better known under the name Sauerland, with its highest elevation, Langenberg and Hegekopf (843m above sea level).
Large closed forests determine the landscape. In the southeast of Diemelsee in direction to Korbach the forest meets acre- and grassland. The meadows around Usseln and Willingen with their tundra flora are evidence of earlier agriculture forms. The untouched valley of Diemel is a combing part, which run through the nature park from its source south Usseln to the north.
Devoniche slate, quarz, marl and chalky sand stone form the dour hilltops of the low mountain range, which is with the Eigenberg (562 m) in the west of Korbach a geological specialty. It is the only “Goldberg” in Germany, as studies proofed again. But the lords of Waldeck and Pyrmont closed the gold mines in the Thirty Years’ War.
A lot of hiker trails, as well as paths, acquire die beauty of the landscape with an alternation of forest and field, mountain and valley. The attractiveness of the landscape is more attractive in the wintertime through ski runs, cross-country ski runs and toboggan runs. In the summertime the clear stretch of water, especially the river Diemel and the lake Diemel attract Water sportsmen and-women and anglers. A lot of Vantage points like the Eisenberg above the Diemel dam or the St. Muffter above Heringhausen enable a wide view over the land of Waldeck. But also the dense forests and a hiking tour in the “Waldecker Upland” becomes an unforgettable experience.
