Naturpark Dümmer
In the middle of the 472 km² large nature park, fed by the river Hunte, lies the lake of Dümmer, which is embedded in humid grassland and moors. In this “humid area of international importance” are a lot of rare and endangered bird species like the white storks and the labwing existent. Also in the wintertime you can meet a lot of resting migratory birds from northern and eastern Europe. The nature reserve station, situated in the Ochsenmoor, informs you about the tasks and the importance and offers guided tours. A special view delivers the 18 km long “Dümmer Weg”, which circles around the lake above the Dümmer dam. The nature park area enables the whole year, a silent and varied holiday. The hiking trails and cycle ways are well developed. Covered wagons are an interesting possibility for groups to discover the landscape. Windmills were characteristic for the landscape southeast of the lake of Dümmer. The windmills can be visited especially at the grind- and bakery days of the “Westfälische Mühlenstraße”.
The Dümmer is an extraordinary water sport area (sailing, surfing etc.). In the wintertime ice sailing and -skating is possible. Friends of fishing can do their sport at the Hunte and at the Dümmer. Swimming pools, riding places, tennis courts, a golf course etc. complete the program of the playing- and sport facilities of the nature park.
