Fichtelgebirge

The nature park Fichtelgebirge has the task to conserve and care for the varied landscape in the area of conflict between wooded areas and agricultural used plateaus.

The wooded highs of the Fichtelgebirge with the Schneeberg (1053m) as the highest elevation are formed by deep forests with moors and dampened clearing islands. Granite-, rocks towers and the labyrinth of Luisenburg are the emblems of the Fichtelgebirge. Arnica and wild orchids are some of the rare plants in the clearing islands.
The blueberries in the forests are the main food of the capercaillies. The moors and the lichens are remains of the ice age.

The natural rivers Eger and Röslau including their tributaries drain the inner Fichtelgebirge.
Such valleys are highly esteemed by nature reservation. They are important habitats for kingfishers, pearl oysters, beaver and otter.
Villages, towns and the surrounding fields represent the varied land developed and cultivated by man.

For your information nature park info-points were established in Grasemann near Warmensteinach, in Weißenstadt, in Zell and in Arzberg. The quarry Häuselloh demonstrates its technique and manufacturing. In the silver quarry and the mediaeval gold mine in Goldkronach one can experience the working day in a mine.
