Naturpark
Frankenwald

The nature park Frankenwald in Upper Franconia is part of the low mountain range in Germany. This wooded area is combined with the nature parks Thüringer Wald and Thüringer Slategebirge – Obere Saale. They make up a closed nature park area with 400.000 hectare, in which the nature park Frankenwald covers 102.250 hectares. The nature park is part of the districts Kronach, Hof and Kulmbach.
The nature park is a landscape, whose conservation is the task of the nature park society. The settlement of the “Nortwald” began in the 13th century, not in the humid valleys but in the wooded plateaus. Later the settlement of the valleys began and typical meadow valley emerged. Following triad forms the nature park: cleared plateaus - wooded slopes - meadow valleys.

On Grauwacke and Tonslate the spruce forests grow up to 794m high on the Döbra. The Slate forms the houses – still today the “blue gold” is used for roofing. The habitants are united with their Franconian Forest. It was basis for their glass- and porcelain industry. Franconian fir trees were transported on the rafts to Amsterdam.

The Frankenwald is a popular recreational area with its beautiful landscape, cultural monuments, museums, customs and silence. Signed hiking tracks and cycle ways lead through the varied landscape.
