Hüttener Berge

Until the 16th century dense forests covered the eastern part of Schleswig-Holstein. The long duration of the forest coverage is mirrored in the nature park Hüttener Berge with the appearance of forest- and clearing names like for example Holzbunge, Schoothorst, Osterbyholz or Jürgenstrade.
In the 16th century the wooded area started declining with the extensive commercial use of wood by the farmers, nobility and landlords. In the middle of the 18th century wood had to be imported from Pomerania, Sweden and the Baltic states because the own forests could not cover the demand.

In order to get the wood shortage under control the use of wood became regularised by law and tree nurseries were founded. But the desired success stayed away. A fundamental change was required. The agrarian reform in the end of the 18th century was the result: Forests and meadows were divided from each other and the farmers could use wood as firewood and lumber.
Detailed information is provided in the exhibition in the Redderhus, at the information centre for tourism, environment and nature.
