The nature park is mainly formed by the end moraine of the Saale III ice age and the forests are characterised by pine and oak trees, home of the capercaillie

Around 15 % of the 580km2 large nature park is formed by brown coal surface mining. The Heinz Sielman nature park information centre provides information about Nature and landscape of the former mining dominated region, where seven greater and 30 smaller lakes were aborning by now.
As cultural places of excursion the villages Luckau, Fürstlich Drehna and Altdöbern offer mediaeval city centres, castles and old watermills.
