Naturpark
Obere Donau

In 1980 the nature park “Obere Donau” was founded. It is situated in the south of Baden-Württemberg apart from the metropolitan area. The 1350 km2 covering area of the nature park is rural. 40% of the nature park is used agriculturally. 47% of the nature park area is wooded.

The conservation and maintenance of the hedge landscape as well as the typical juniper meadows are important tasks of the nature park. Through sheep farming, nature friendly agricultural use and further landscape conservation measures the landscape is preserved. Abiding by the motto “Conservation through use” the initiative “Naturpark-Lebensmittel” (nature park food) exists for several years, which provides in cooperation with farmers, gastronomes, nature protection associations, authorities and nature park offices labels of origin and quality for agricultural and craftwork products, like for example nature park menu, felt, wool, apple juice.

A well-developed route network provides recreational possibilities for the human being and rest areas for the nature. One of the most attractive cycle tours in the nature park is the “Donautal-cycle track” from Immendingen to Ertingen. The NATURPARK-EXPRESS from may to October every Saturday, Sunday, Monday and holidays is one of the specialities of the nature park. This train connects the cities Sigmaringen and Blumberg and has a bike wagon.
The landmarks of the nature park are among other the Kolbing stalactite caves, open-air museum Neuhausen ob Eck, the castle Sigmaringen, the Fehlatal and the archabbey Beuron.

 nature highlights
The nature park "Obere-Donau" offers its visitors several natural highlights, die steep cliffs of the Danube valley, which offer rare animal and plant species a habitat. The limestone is riddled with several caves and stalactite caves, which provide bats a living space. And the unique vegetation in the plateaus like for example in "Irndorfer Hard" offers an impressive species diversity and rare relict plants.
