Naturpark Thüringer Schiefergebirge/Obere Saale
The nature park " Thuringia Slate Mountain/Upper Saale” covers on a surface of around 800km2 a diverse and attractive landscape. In the south of the nature park the mountains reach an elevation of around 800 m. Forests cover a wide range of the area. Deeply incised stream valleys lie between the mountains, like a “blue tie” the Saale meanders. The central “Oberland” is determined by hilly and sparsely wooded pleateaus. The sunny Saale valley with its two large dams, also known as the sea of Thuringia, and the blue tie of Saale is a popular holiday and excursion area. The “Rennsteig”, the most known trail of Thuringia, starts in Blankenstein and leaves the nature park by Lehesten near Wetzstein. In the historical slate quarry area between Probstzella, Lehesten and Ludwigstadt high-quality roof- and wall-slate is still mined and was mined for centuries. Thus, a characteristic landscape resulted, little towns with blue slate-roofes and –facades as well as high slate-heaps covered with moss, lichen, herbs and trees. This particular region in Germany of slate quarry can be discovered through a walking-tour on the newly built slate nature trail.
