Naturpark
Rhein-Westerwald e.V.

The 446 km2 large nature park belongs to the Lower “Westerwald” is part of the Rhenish Schistose Mountain. Consequently the nature park is divided into three parts: At the western border the landscape is formed by the typical Middle-Rhine character with vineyards and steep, sunny precipices. In eastern direction the Wied, which is rich of windings with its undercut- and slip-off slopes, offers a various and charming recreational area. The wavy plateaus of Westerwald reach the altitude of 400 m. Besides the Rhine and the Wied the valleys of different streams are forming the landscape and hold some botanic rarities.
Around 45% of the nature park is wooded, 34% are agriculturally used.
The interplay of climate, geological composition and human utilisation resulted in the appearance of water springs, streams, rivers, swamps and hardwood-rich forests. Well-developed hiking trails open up the varied landscape with a rich flora and fauna as well as several cultural memorials like cloister, churches, castle ruins, windmills und parts of the Romanian Limes.
