Naturpark Rothaargebirge
The nature park Rothaargebirge is a charming low mountain range landscape between the upper Ruhr and the Lahn River. The northern part including the upper Ruhr valley belongs to the Hochsauerland. The southern part comprises the Wittgensteiner Land and parts of the Siegerland as well as Parts of the Südsauerland in the west. The park is named after the Rothaargebirge, which joins the Astengebirge and the Kahle Asten (841 m) in the south. Many highlands and mountain ridges with the founts of the rivers Ruhr, Lenne, Eder, Lahn and Sieg arrange the landscape and the dark green of Firt woodlands is interspersed with brighter Beech forests. The highest peaks reach over 843 m (Langenberg) and 841 m like the Kahle Asten the most popular mountain in West Germany. Here you can find the Asten tower as well as the information centre of the nature park. Many track paths are available and the Rothaarsteig, a new mountain ridge track (156 km) was founded in 2001. Moreover the nature park offers 180 parking places near the track paths, nature trails, playgrounds and barbecue places as well as the possibility for sporting activities like fishing, paragliding, golf, mountain biking, riding and tennis. Around the Kahler Asten many winter sports opportunities are given, like skiing, cross country skiing and an ice pavilion.
