Naturpark
Westensee

A recreational area in geographical middle of Schleswig-Holstein between North Sea and Baltic Sea

In an especially charming landscape lies the nature park Westensee between the cities Kiel, Rendsburg and Neumünster. It was named after the 7 km2 large lake Westensee. The whole area covers a surface of around 250 km2. In 1970 the area around the Westensee was declared a nature park due to the fulfilment of the requirements for a recreational area as large, beautiful and various cultural landscapes.

Hills and valleys, meadows, forests, lakes and moors alternate in a colourful row. Each of the landscapes, like the lakes Westensee, Warder-Brahm- Pohl and the Borgdorfer See in the south and the moors in Haßmoor, Katenstedt and Schülp near Nortdorf, has their own character, which attracts different people.
Other parts of the nature park, especially the various small nature reserve areas and nature trails create recreational areas. Here you can find beautiful hiking trails and information points, which help you to discover the nature.

The second highest elevation of the whole area is the Tüteberg (88.3m) from which you can enjoy a wonderful view over the Westensee to the city Kiel. The highest elevation is the Kieler Berg (94 m), which is one the most beautiful part of the nature park.

One of the extraordinary memorial buildings of the nature park Westensee are the “Herrenhäuser Schierensee, Detsch-Nienhof and Emkendorf”. Additionaly, one can mention the medieval church St.-Catharinen in Westensee and St. Georg- and Mauritius-Church in Flemhude. In Emkendorf the “Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival” takes place annually.

The varied landscape of the nature park Westensee offers its entire guest a large possibility of leisure activities. You can swim in the hidden and beautiful lakes, hike on the nature reserve areas and bike on the cycle trails. Not to forget the fishing possibilities at the rivers and lakes.

Guided bike tours are offered for smaller groups, which will lead you to the most beautiful view points and sights of the nature park Westensee. Directly at the Brahmsee you can find the animal park “Arche Warder”, which is today the largest animal park in Europe with rare and endangered animals.
