Steigerwald

Nature park Steigerwald - Land of pleasure between vine and beer, conciliation of human being and nature

Between the Main and Aisch rivers and the four cities Würzburg - Bamberg - Nuremberg - Rothenburg ob der Tauber you can find this densely wooded low mountain range called "Steigerwald".
Human settlements in the Steigerwald date back to as early as the Stone Age, some 80,000 years. There are Celtic and Roman traces to be found. When the Romans crossed the river Danube in search of land, the Alemanni people reserved the Steigerwald as their place to live.
Just like the entire Holy Roman Empire of German Nation, the Steigerwald did not manage to find unity. Many spiritual and worldly sovereigns shared the land. The influence of the Cistercian Abbey in Ebrach and the Diocese of Bamberg determined the history of the northern part of the Steigerwald in later years.
In the west, the Diocese of Würzburg was in charge. The Margraviate Ansbach-Bayreuth and the Princedom of Schwarzenberg owned the most land in the south. In the years from 1803 to 1810, Bavaria gradually enclosed the Steigerwald with its borders. This did not go without tension.

Today, the Steigerwald profits from this history: The landscape remained free from industry and free for visitors who want to spend their vacation in the green woods and at the ponds or in one of the historical towns.

Franconia can look back on a varied history for millenniums. Whether you are with the car or on a motorbike, whether you bike or hike through the woods, the Steigerwald offers you a plethora of views and insights.

The people of the Steigerwald are right to be proud of their heritage and traditions. On holidays, the women wear their adorned ribbons, the men Franconia knickerbockers and the tricorne hat or "Goggs" hat.
You will be surprised to see how active the various traditional groups (music, history, gardening etc.) in the Steigerwald are, how important heritage and tradition are to the people or with how much relish Franconian villages celebrate their "Kirchweih".

The Steigerwald has a lot of castles, churches and historical monuments as well as many museums.

Music-lovers will have a chance for their passion as well. No matter whether you enjoy traditional folk music or classical concerts.
Moreover you can enjoy horseback or carriage riding, explore the surroundings on well-marked hiking/biking paths, play tennis, squash or miniature golf or go for a round of the German version of bowling. Golf players meet in Bamberg, Bad Windsheim, Herzogenaurach or Reichmannsdorf and in Geiselwind.

Enjoy a swim in our water parks or refresh your tan at one of our lakes for bathing. Our leisure time programs offer just the right thing for everyone in the family.
Do something for your health at the spa in Bad Windsheim, enjoy the spa gardens, and get refreshed with new strength. For more than one hundred years, we have had our brine and natural water.
