Naturpark Steinhuder Meer
The largest lake of Germany’s northwest, the Steinhuder Meer (30 km2) is the heart of 310km2 large nature park and the most attractive landscape of this region. Two artificial islands are located within the lake: Wilhelmstein and the Badeinsel. Moreover the lake was declared as Wetland International Importance. This means for the government and the federal state Lower Saxony to fulfil the obligation, to conserve and develop this area. The varied landscape combined with the multifaceted activities like swimming, sailing and surfing, as well as hiking and cycling makes the Steinhuder Meer a supra regional important recreation area. The loop road of 30km around the whole lake offers the possibility to drive or to walk round the whole Steinhuder Meer. Further provides many vantage points a great insight over the sensitive areas.
Our recommendation: Visit the nature park information centre at the south bank.
