Naturpark
Thüringer Wald

The green heart of Germany

The nature park Thüringer Wald (Thuringia Forest) is with its surface of 2.082 sqkm one of the largest nature parks of Germany. It covers the Thuringia Forest, the western Thuringia Slate Mountain and parts of the mountain foreland. It ranges over 100 km from north-west to south-east along the “Rennsteig”, which runs through the whole park. At “Großer Beerberg” the Thuringia Forest reaches its highest elevation with 982 m.
The area of the nature park is characterized by the variety of extensive coniferous forests, blooming meadows and the villages on the highs and deeply incised stream valleys. Moores can be found sporadically.
At many sites the old and cultural landscape is well visible. Acer terraces at the steeps are evidence of a earlier exhausting cultivation. The settlements resulted through the mine and the manufacturing of glass and porcelain.
The diverse nature of the Thuringia forest offers a rich biota. One can find rare and highly specialized animal- and plant-species, like the white-throated dipper, the kingfisher, cotton grasses and sundew.
Cultural highlights in the nature park Thuringia Forest are the guided tours through the historical Old Towns of Gotha, Arnstadt or the Wartburgstadt Eisenach, 850 years of history and histories. Discover the spurs of Johann Sebastian Bach, Martin Luther and Johan Wolfgang von Goethe.
Visit the old cultural grown landscapes of the Thuringia forest and see for yourselves the beautiful landscape of this region with tradition and future.
