Uckermärkische Seen

Land of lakes

As the land of 300 lakes, rivers and streams the people of Uckermark praise their homeland. The 790 km2 large nature park Uckermärkische Seen answers for the title. It is framed by the cities Prenzlau, Fürstenberg, Zehdenick and Templin. After two hours per rail the noise and narrowness of the Berlin metropolitan area gives way to the silence of the wide, glacial stamped landscape with its original villages. At the end moraine wall hills and lakes alternate on a narrow area. In the south of the nature park the ice left behind beside the rubble also extensive outwash plains, in which the several small channel lakes and moors can be found. Forests capture the half of the nature park. Beech groves are growing in the north and in the sabulous south the pine is dominant. Due to the structural richness of the landscape a wide range of endangered species find here their home. Ten per cent of all ospreys and white-tailed eagles of Germany live in this region. The appearance of the European terrapin is a rarity. The otter and beaver can also be found in the nature park. A total of 1.200 plant species were verified in the area, one fifth of them is endangered.
The nature park is offers also cultural highlights. Several “Feldstein churches” are evidence of a German-Pommerania settlement since the 12th century. In the fishing villages the people from the Uckermark lived
In the 18th and 19th century the glass- and tar production flourished in the towns. In several farms of the nature park rural tourism is fostered. The impetus is given by an extensive agriculture. Beside 580 km signed track paths 100 km of water paths lead through the land of lakes.
